Golden, Crisp, and Clear: The Perfect Iced Black Gold

When the summer heat settles in, our relationship with the kettle changes. We start looking for that deep, immediate sense of relief that only a tall, ice-cold glass can bring.

But if you’ve ever tried to make iced tea at home by simply tossing hot tea into the fridge, you might have ended up with a glass that looks cloudy, dull, or muddy.

Brewing a truly spectacular, crystal-clear iced tea is a simple art. With a few mindful adjustments, you can transform our rich Black Gold loose leaf (or any of our selections, for that matter) into the ultimate summer cooler.

The Secret to Crystal-Clear Iced Tea

Why does tea get cloudy? It comes down to chemistry. Black tea is rich in natural compounds called polyphenols. When hot tea is cooled down too rapidly (like putting it directly into the freezer or pouring it over ice while steaming hot), these compounds bind together and precipitate out of the liquid, creating a hazy, murky look.

To keep your Black Gold bright, vibrant, and beautifully clear, follow this simple method:

Brew it strong - 5 minutes

Use 1 to 2 tablespoons of Black Gold leaves for every 4 cups of water. Brew with boiling water for 5 minutes. We want a robust infusion because it will be chilled.

Warm to cool

Strain the leaves and let the brewed tea sit on your counter until it reaches room temperature on its own. Do not rush this step by putting it in the fridge. Slow cooling keeps the polyphenols separate and the liquid perfectly clear.

Chill and store - Ready for Ice

Once it’s completely cool to the touch, place it in the refrigerator. It will stay bright, clear, and delicious for up to three days.
